The first efforts to establish a Golf Course was in July 1966, but it was not until September 1971 that the way was cleared to form a Club and develop an area.

On 18th October 1971 attended by 200-250 people the opening was held at Charlestown Community Centre and Charlestown Golf Club was formed.

Elected officers were as follows:

Pres: Jack Barker

Vice: A.De Martin
Secretary: S. Powell
Treasurer: C.Clark
Captain: N. Fleming
Honorary Solicitor: Michael Hill
Committee: E. Donohue, R. Wilson, L.Witherdin, W. Chapman, R. Hughes, R. Guildford, I. Southwick, R. Faulkiner, D. Owens, F. Quested.
 
Fees were set at Members:$20, Associates: $10, Husband and Wife: $25
 

A modest weatherboard cottage was the original Clubhouse.

The land was owned by Lake Macquarie Council and currently is still leased from them
